Why your dreams are never too big for God
Have you ever had an idea, a spark of inspiration that felt too big? I have too.
I’m one of those people who always has more interests and hobbies than time to do all of them. I have so many dreams, and want to follow all of them! But some, well they feel too big, too unrealistic, too silly.
My big silly dream
One such dream is running writing retreats, and worship retreats where I teach people to write books or songs that will glorify Jesus. This dream is WAY TOO BIG in my mind. But guess what? It’s not too big for God. I was talking to Him about it the other day when he asked me what my big dreams were. I told him about that one, but followed with, “But it’s just too crazy. I don’t think it can ever happen.” Do you know what His reply was? “What if the big dreams are the ones I want you to follow?”
This thought blew my brain a little bit. What? God wanting me to pursue the very thing I have deemed impossible? Isn’t it better to aim a little lower and avoid that possible disappointment? But I did truly feel Him challenging me to dream bigger, and to believe better.
By saying that my dream is too big I am sort of saying that God isn’t big enough in a way. I am not trusting that He can do it; and not only that, I’m not trusting that He wants to do it.
I did truly feel Him challenging me to dream bigger, and to believe better.

Does God actually want my dream to come true?
I think the want part of this is the biggest part. I know that God is a massive God, who has moved oceans before. So I know that He can help me with this dream. The tricky part is, does He want to?
Have you ever felt that? The icky feeling in the back of your mind that God doesn’t really care about your dreams, or your life? I’ve certainly felt it. It’s like a little seed of doubt telling me that God doesn’t really want to help me, and He doesn’t really have great things for me. That little feeling, my friends, is the enemy.
Now, the enemy is sly, and has a way of slipping and sliding his way into our thoughts without us ever realizing. When we do notice, the best thing to do is remind ourselves of the truth. The Bible is the best physical place to find this truth. Here are some I found:
Jeremiah 29:11. โFor I know the plans I have for you,โ says the Lord. โThey are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.โ
Proverbs 16:3. โCommit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.โ
Matthew 6:33. โSeek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.โ
Psalm 37:4. “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”
What we learn from the Scriptures is that God actually does care about us, and our dreams. He is not a distant faraway God, but a close up in our hearts God. He doesn’t just care if we go to church and pray. He also cares about our deepest desires…and guess what? Those desires are from Him in the first place.
He is not a distant faraway God, but a close up in our hearts God.

Why would God pick me?
Wondering why on earth God thinks you’re up to pursuing this dream? Same. But if there’s something I’ve learnt from reading the stories of the people of the Bible, it’s that God never used the most confident or perfect of people. He always picked the ones who didn’t seem up to it. The ones who didn’t measure up.
Once, he called a man to speak for Him, and this guy had a speech impediment. Another time, he chose to use a prostitute to take part in the plot of a city’s destruction. Like I said, not the kinds of people we would pick for big dreams and big plans. But God picked them, and if He’s picked you for a special dream (even if it feels too big) you can trust that He knows you are up to it. Maybe not by yourself, but with God, we can do literally anything.
If He’s picked you for a special dream (even if it feels too big) you can trust that He knows you are up to it.

How on earth should I respond to this kind of craziness?
Once we grasp the fact that, firstly, God actually wants to help up pursue a dream, and, secondly, that He did pick us on purpose, how on earth can we respond?
Some very understandable emotions might pop up – fear, worry, disbelief, excitement, doubt – all of these are just fine, and God knew you were going to feel just how you feel. All He is asking for is your “YES”.
Saying “yes” to God can feel like signing up for an impossible mission. It can also feel like letting go of those “realistic” doubts, and just trusting that God will find a way somehow. For me, I find that I’m always drawn to say “yes, but”. That but is like my safeguard, my “okay God, but I’m just going to have a bit of doubt and not really believe it’s going to happen in case it doesn’t and I get disappointed”. This kind of “yes” makes God sigh and feel a bit sad. He wants us to believe it’s possible with no “but”s.
Even if you say yes, and it doesn’t end up working out the way you thought, God hasn’t failed, your plans have simply rerouted.
Saying “yes” to God can feel like signing up for an impossible mission.

Now just hold God’s big hand as you follow this big dream
God has very big hands. They are so big, that He’ll be able to help you through whatever this dream brings. If you can let go of doubts and take hold of that hand, life could just get pretty special and exciting.
I’m not talking about flying to Paris or becoming a millionaire kind of exciting. I’m talking about doing something – anything – for the big picture that God has going on. Even selling flowers at a roadside stall can be part of His big plan. Even teaching people how to fold origami. Even starting a cleaning business. Even writing a book. Even your dream can play a part in His big plan. It’s important enough, it’s valuable enough, it’s worth enough.
Even your dream can play a part in His big plan. It’s important enough, it’s valuable enough, it’s worth enough.
